For my brainstorming session, I did a free write. I did more of a stream of consciousness, that revolved around my paper because I was hesitant to find an idea of what I really wanted to write about. I did a free write for about 15 minutes, but it went on for pretty long so I cut it down a little bit. The free write in in the following paragraph block.
Free Write: I found an article kind of revolved around my ideas or concepts of mental illness, but I feel like the article I chose just is not right. I am thinking I might just use it for the free draft and maybe find a better one for the final draft? I am not sure. I just think the article I choose should be significantly longer than the one I chose. So I will just have to decide on what I am going to do. I think I can probably write the free draft with that short excerpt from the newspaper article that I found, but not sure. I am conflicted on it, but I think I can connect the assigned readings from class to the topic of mental illness/mental health. I think I just might want to make it more about mental health in general, not illness specific. But again, then I would have to find a new article to support my arguments better. So right now, this is more of me being conflicted on what to do, than an actual outline of ideas. So for things to talk about, or some main points, I actually do have some ideas. With the current article I chose, I wanted to make the connection between mental health stigmas, and how the arts can sometimes promote them, yet science rarely does. I actually agree with Yo-Yo Ma originally, where it would be a good idea to combine the arts fields with the science fields, and maybe if I chose a different article I would pursue that, but for now I am going to kind of play my own devil’s advocate. I think that will probably work out then if I wanted to incorporate a naysayers paragraph into my essay. So for now, I think I will try and stick to it. I can also talk about how the arts dramatize some issues that are actually serious and important for the sake of entertainment, therefore they shouldn’t be included into the sciences. If that makes any sense. I think it sounds good, I am glad I at least have somewhat of a foundation of ideas for my essay now.
