In his article “Battling the Mental Illness Stigma”, Michael Wyskiel discusses how mental illness is oftentimes a hard subject to talk about. He begs the question of why is it, why do we prefer to keep it secretive or pretend that it does not exist in the first place. He references numerous statistics of mental illness, and quotes from very reputable sources. Wyskiel offers reasons as to why so many mental illnesses are often stigmatized and ways that we can change that. He insists we start a conversation about it, discuss how to fix the stigmas. He discusses the personal responsibility we have as well as the societal responsibility to ending the stigmas around mental health and getting each other help.
I thought this would be a good fit for my article because it talks about how mental illness intertwines within the arts and sciences. That can easily tie in with the other articles we talked about in class. It is very easily digestible and the article gives room for interpretation and discussion within my final paper.
This source is reliable because it passes the CRAAP test. It is current, published in December 2018. He cites a couple of other sources saying where he got his information. Also, some of the article he gives a little bit of his opinion, but he also opens it up for conversation and other views. The article was written for a well-known and respected newspaper. Since it is in a newspaper, there are some ads, but I found it online and there were no ads there. He is not trying to sell or convince me of anything, he is just starting a conversation. He is also citing all of his sources, throughout his article.
